In 2014, Avery rediscovered his childhood love of TTRPGs but was disappointed to see that category technology has remained stuck in the past—and in 2020, he set out to change how we TTRPG by founding Bringing Fire. Our mission is to level up the tech in tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) with user-centric design, content portability, and open standards. Together, we have over 40 years of experience in startups and tech.

Avery has spent more than 25 years navigating the technology space as a creative-tech hybrid. Prior to Bringing Fire, he led the Engineering Communications division of the multibillion-dollar database company MongoDB, where he spearheaded the creative and technical production of global keynote presentations and software demos.

Josh met Avery at MongoDB, where he served as a senior engineer exploring every corner of modern app development and building the company’s foundational cloud infrastructure.
As a seasoned GM, Josh has often pondered how technology can make his life as a GM easier and is excited to dive in and make something new.

Bill White
Sage | Head of Education
Bill is a GM, game studies scholar, and game designer. He is a Professor at Penn State Altoona and serves as an editor of the International Journal of Role-Playing.
He has published his work in Analog Game Studies and the Japanese Journal of Analog Role-Playing Game Studies and is the author of RPG Design in Theory and Practice at the Forge, 2001-2012: Designs & Discussions as well as the independently published the small press game Ganakagok.
